Gutters
The condition of your gutters and downspouts is critical to prevent water damage to your roof. Gutters and downspouts that are in working condition will allow for adequate water draining and disposal to a location where it cannot damage your property’s structure or where you can reuse it in your home or garden. Despite gutters’ critical role in water management, many homeowners neglect their gutters and ignore routine gutter inspection and maintenance. By the time they realize a problem, their gutters or downspouts may already be beyond repair. If you live in the Indianapolis area, the good news is that help is a phone call away. M&J Exteriors offers high-quality gutter installation, repair, and maintenance services. If you are serious about water draining and caring for your roof, keep reading to learn how we can help you.
Gutter Materials
Channel Size
There are many different types of gutter materials that you can consider, including plastic and copper. The most popular materials for gutters are galvanized steel or seamless aluminum because of their durability and affordability.
Gutters with a “K” profile are typically available in 5” and 6”. If you have a relatively large roof area, you may be better off with the 6” size that can accommodate more water.
Gutter Guards
Gutter Color
If there are many trees and other sources of plant debris close to your home, gutter guards may be an effective way to prevent the waste from clogging your gutters and downspouts.
Since gutters have a prominent appearance, matching their color to your home can add some visual appeal. If the color of the gutter is important to you, aluminum gutters are the better option.
Repair vs. Replace
Replacing your gutters is not always the ideal solution, however. In some cases, a simple repair or cleaning job will suffice to ensure that your gutters perform optimally. If you notice standing water on your roof or if no water comes out of your downspouts, contact M&J Exteriors for a thorough inspection and professional recommendation.
When to Consider Getting New Gutters
Gutter systems, especially ones made from galvanized steel or aluminum, can typically last for many years. Since gutter replacements are more expensive than repairs, you don’t want to replace your gutters because of a small problem. There are, however, instances when a gutter replacement is the only solution. Let’s look at some of the signs that it is time to replace your gutters.
Separating Gutter Segments
Multiple Holes and Cracks in the Gutters
Gutter segments fit into one another to form one continuous channel. If these segments pull apart despite numerous repair efforts, it is an indication that you should replace your gutter system.
A little crack here or there is easy to repair with a sealant or filler. If your entire gutter system is full of holes and leaks, however, repairs may not be the ideal solution to have your gutter functioning normally anymore.
Loose Nails or Screws
Gutters that Pull Away from the Roof
It is normal to encounter a loose nail or screw occasionally. When you continuously find fasteners lying on the ground, however, it may be a sign that your gutter system is deteriorating.
If the gutters pull away from your roof, rainwater that collects on your roof will merely fall to the ground or accumulate next to your fascia boards. Gutters that pull away from your roof are a sign of general weathering of your gutters and fascia boards. The only solution in cases like these is to replace your gutters and maybe even your facia boards entirely.
Sagging Gutters
Flooding Basement
A gutter that sags or that is not properly pitched towards the downspouts will accumulate water in segments., which will result in spilling. Contact M&J Roofing and Exteriors as we may be able to repair the problem. In most cases, however, sagging gutters have to be replaced.
Faulty gutters can result in water influx into your basement as well as extensive damage to your property’s structure. Although a repair job may suffice, in most cases the only solution is to replace your gutters.
Broken Fasteners
It is normal for the metal brackets that attach your gutters to your roof to occasionally break. If you find, however, that there is always more than one that is broken, it is an indication that you have to replace your gutters.
Age
A brand-new gutter system can function adequately for around twenty years if it is regularly maintained. If your existing gutter system is older than a couple of decades and doesn’t dispose of rainwater effectively, you may have to replace your gutters.
